How do you learn mathematics?

Someone told me that you should study and practice math, and I will learn it through experience, but I have been working on it - secant- and it seems that some believe it is God given, versus science which is experience based. So, do you think that people that are adept at mathematics just have an innate ability, or is it something that we can be trained to understand?
